A Newark police captain was injured Monday when he was struck by an ATV whose driver fled the scene, authorities said.
The officer was hit about 4 p.m. on Coeyman Street, according to Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose.
“The officer complained of pain and was treated at the scene,” Ambrose said.
The ATV driver fled after striking the officer, Ambrose said. The incident is under investigation, he added.
The captain, whose name was not released, works in the city’s second precinct, which is about 1.5 miles from the scene.
